A brief synopsis of each candidate follows:
District 1: Brenda Muhammad
Muhammad is currently an active board member with the Atlanta Board
of Education. She also serves on the board of directors at Southside
Health Center, the Warren Memorial Boys and Girls Club, and the National
Kidney Foundation. Muhammad is a former board member of the Metropolitan
Atlanta Crime Commission and is active in her local PTA and the South
Atlanta Neighborhood Development (SAND).
District 2 - Mitzi Bickers
Bickers, a representative of district two and current president of the
Atlanta Board of Education, grew up in the Atlanta Public School system
where she attended M. Agnes Jones Elementary School and Frederick Douglass
High School. After graduating from college, she returned to the Atlanta
Public School system as a teacher. She has also served as chairperson
for the School Facilities Committee and Facilities Related Issues. During
her first term on the board, Bickers served as vice president of the
board, chairperson of Student Support Services, and chairperson of Governmental
Relations.
District 3 - Michael Holiman
Holiman has served on the Atlanta Board of Education since 1997. He
also serves on the boards of Atlanta Educational Television Cooperative
(WPBA-TV and WABE-FM) and the Georgia Press Association. From 1995 to
1997, he served as chair of a Citizen Advisory Panel that reported monthly
to Fulton County Juvenile Court Judges with recommendations relative
to children in the state foster program. Holiman was a member of the
Morningside Lenox Park Association board from 1993 to 1997 and served
as president during 1997.
District 4 - Katy Pattillo
Pattillo has worked with the PTA of Sarah Smith Elementary School for
seven years, and while serving as president she was instrumental in
the school being named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department
of Education, the highest award a school can receive. She also served
as chair of the Metro Atlanta Boys and Girls Club and is currently a
board member. Pattillo is a former lawyer who worked in the United States
Senate and participated in Leadership Atlanta in 1987.
District 5 - Tim Birt
Birt grew up in district five. He is founder of Brothers For Unity,
an organization that works with at-risk youth. He's also worked with
The Atlanta Project as a volunteer youth coordinator for the Archer
Cluster. Birt served on the board of directors of Harry's Farmers Market
for corporate sponsorship for the Archer Cluster and served with the
100 Black Men of Atlanta as a volunteer and youth advisor.
District 6 - Sadie Dennard
Dennard has been the 6th district representative of the Atlanta School
Board since 1994. Since her election, Dennard has served as president
and held the post of chairman of the Committees on Instruction, Personnel
and Government and Community Involvement. Additionally, she has provided
key leadership for the board's strategic planning activities, establishment
of curriculum standards, performance standards for teachers and the
establishment of a 0-3 early learning task force. Currently, Dennard
is the Board Accountabilities Chairman. She's also a member of the board
of directors for the Georgia School Board Association, Project GRAD,
Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education, WPBA, the Atlanta Council
of PTA Advisory Council, the American Association of Blacks in Energy,
and the Adams Park Neighborhood Association.
District 7 - Eric Wilson
As a volunteer and mentor, Wilson has served with the United Way-Success
By Six Mentor Program, and as a volunteer with the Metro Atlanta Youth
Motivation Days at Mary Lin Elementary, South Atlanta and Alonzo Crim
High Schools. In addition, he served as a mentor in the Morris Brown
Head Start Program. Wilson is an active member on the board of directors
for the Youth Connection, The Clean Air Campaign, the Fernbank Natural
Museum Artemis Guild, the Atlanta Empowerment Zone, and a member of
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. where he participates in its annual S.A.T.
classes for high school students.
District 8 - Mark Riley
Riley is the director of the Sartain Lanier Family Foundation, which
was invested in public school reform and improvement efforts such as
the Atlanta Committee for Public Education and The Georgia Partnership
for Excellence in Education. He is a board member of Charis Community
Housing and Collaborative Education Partnership. Riley is a past board
member of Georgia Trust for Historical Preservation and has participated
in Leadership Atlanta.
District 9 - Emmett Johnson
Johnson has served on the Atlanta Board of Education since 1997 where
he chaired the Community Support of School Reform and Innovations Ad
Hoc Committee in 2000, and currently chairs the Board Development task
force. Johnson has been an officer of PTA for 16 years, and is a past
president of the Atlanta Councils of PTAs, Douglas High School PTSA
and the Collier Heights Elementary School PTA. Also, he served on the
Youth & Educational Advisory Committee for the 1996 Paralympic Games.
About EduPAC
EduPAC is made up of influential organizations in metro Atlanta including
100 Black Men of Atlanta, the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and
the Metro Atlanta Coalition of 100 Black Women. In 1993, the Metro Atlanta
Chamber of Commerce initiated the creation of EduPAC to improve the
Atlanta Public School System as a huge priority for the business community
and all organizations involved. Established for the 2001 November 6th
Atlanta School Board election, EduPAC is dedicated to promoting quality
leadership for Atlanta Public Schools.
