The Atlanta School System is under the management and control of the Atlanta Board of Education. The Board is composed of nine members elected in nonpartisan elections. Three members are elected citywide and six are elected from districts, all for four-year terms.

To qualify for election a candidate must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a resident of the City of Atlanta. If planning to represent a district, must be a resident of that district
  • Be a registered voter
  • Not be an employee of the state Department of Education or a member of the State Board of Education.

To hold office a candidate must:

  • Possess all of the above qualifications
  • Reside in their respective district
  • Not hold any other elective public office
  • Not be an employee of the Atlanta Board of Education or any other local board of education

Summary of Conduct of Elections

The regular General Election for electing public officials is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November (Nov. 6, 2001). All registered voters within the city limits of Atlanta are entitled to vote in the election. The person receiving the majority of the votes cast for each position will be elected. The elected candidate will take office the first Monday of January immediately following the election and shall serve for four years until the office expires on December 31, 2005.
